Summer 2024

Welcome back to our last term in Year 2! I can’t believe it’s already the summer term!  Hopefully the weather catches up.                                                      

We have a very busy term ahead full of exciting things to learn as well as completing the end of Key Stage One SATs and preparing for life in Year Three.

The children will continue to learn through a Creative Curriculum in cross-curricular lessons which will cover all areas of the National Curriculum.  Below is a taster of some of the learning that will take place over the coming months in each subject…

In English we will be reading a variety of texts and will explore different genres of writing:

  • Writing an instruction text
  • Shape Poetry
  • Diary Recount
  • Writing a story
  • Classic Poetry

In our exciting Maths lessons, we will be learning:

  • Fractions
  • Time
  • Position and Direction
  • Statistics
  • Problem Solving and Efficiency

In RE we will grow closer to God through the themes of:

  • Easter
  • The Mass
  • Our Church
  • Family Life

Science lessons will be focused on Animals including Humans and Plants

We will learn about:

  • Babies
  • Growing and changing
  • Basic Needs
  • Healthy Eating
  • Healthy Hearts
  • Keeping Clean

Plants

  • Observing Plants
  • Seeds and Bulbs
  • Life Cycles
  • What do Plants need?
  • Plants we eat?
  • Eating Cress

In History we will be focusing on Toys and the changes overtime.

We will learn about

  • John Baskeyfield
  • Captain Smith
  • The 6 towns of Stoke on Trent
  • How has our local area changed over time?
  • How has the landscape of our area changed over time?
  • Change in land use – Festival Park

Geography lessons this term will focus on:

  • Introducing habitats around the world like;
  • Grasslands                                                                                                                   
  • Deserts                                                                                                                           
  • Arctic                                                                                                                      
  • Rainforests
  • How to save the environment.

In Art lessons the children will:

  • Practise tone and shading.
  • Use charcoal, pencil and pastels to create art.
  • Recreate Monet’s Water Lilies
  • Draw a real-life object.

In Design and Technology, the children will be making an Animal Den/Shelter. We will design, make and evaluate and be able to suggest improvements which could be made to the original design.

We will also design and make a food product e.g. Healthy Sandwich

We will focus on skills of:

  • Cutting food safely
  • Weighing ingredients
  • Fine Motor skills
  • Stapling, gluing, taping, safety pinning and stitching a selection of fabrics.

In our P.E. lessons we will:

  • Understand the importance of health-related exercise.
  • Learn Football skills e.g. dribbling, passing and stopping the ball.
  • Learn Tennis Skills e.g. hitting, handling the racquet, controlling the ball.
Spring 2024

Happy New Year! I hope you have all had a warm and cosy Christmas, spending time with your family and friends. Here’s to a new year, hoping 2024 brings you all good health and happiness.

We are looking forward to a super spring term in Year 2. There are lots of exciting things to learn within our curriculum. Below is a taster of some of the learning that will take place over the coming months in each subject…

In English we will be reading a variety of texts and will explore different genres of writing:

  • Modern Poetry – Riddles
  • Story about the wild – Setting description
  • Information text
  • Classic poetry

In our exciting Maths lessons, we will be learning:

  • Number: Multiplication and Division
  • Geometry: Properties of shape

  • Measure: Length and height
  • Measure: Mass, Capacity and Temperature

In RE we will grow closer to God through the themes of:

Science lessons will be focused on Uses of Everyday Materials.

  • Locating toys around the world
  • Compare the differences of where we live and children in Ghana
  • The differences between Gautemala and the UK.
  • The differences between Philippines and the UK.
  • Orienteering
  • Using a map

In Art lessons the children will:

  • Create our own version of Van Gogh’s Starry Night painting.
  • Tone and shading
  • Make Clay Pots with the skills of rolling and coiling.
  • Look at Andy Warhol’s paintings
  • Create a printed piece of art through stamping, pressing, rolling and rubbing.

In Design and Technology, the children will be making a Wooden Spoon Doll. We will design, make and evaluate and be able to suggest improvements which could be made to the original design.

We will also design and make a food product e.g. Easter nests/pancakes.

We will focus on skills of:

  • Cutting food safely
  • Weighing ingredients
  • Fine Motor skills
  • Stapling, gluing, taping, safety pinning and stitching a selection of fabrics.

In our P.E. lessons we will:

  • Understand the importance of health-related exercise.
  • Learn Football skills e.g. dribbling, passing and stopping the ball.
  • Learn Gymnastics skills e.g. balancing, sequencing and rolling
Autumn 2023

Welcome back to the start of a new school year! We are looking forward to a fantastic first term in Year 2. There are lots of exciting things to learn within our curriculum. Below is a taster of some of the learning that will take place over the coming months in each subject…

In English we will be reading a variety of texts and will explore different genres of writing:

  • Recounts
  • Nonsense Poetry
  • Character Descriptions
  • Traditional Stories
  • Instructions
  • Classic poetry

A large focus will be on Handwriting, Punctuation, Grammar and Vocabulary.

Our class author is Judith Kerr and we will enjoy reading a selection of her books this term.

In our exciting Maths lessons we will be learning:

Place Value: Numbers to 100

Number: Addition and Subtraction

Number: Multiplication and Division

Geometry: Properties of shape

Geometry: Money

In RE we will grow closer to God through the themes of:

  • Old Testament stories and Prayers.
  • Sharing in the life of Jesus
  • Parables and Miracles

We will be learning about our class saint- Saint Francis of Assisi

Science lessons will be focused on Living things and their Habitats.

We will learn about the:

  • Comparison of things which are living, dead or have never been alive.
  • Habitats and Microhabitats.
  • World Habitats
  • Food Chains
  • Classification of animals including rainforest and polar animals.
  • Ocean Habitats
  • Water Pollution
  • Endangered Animals.

In History we will be focusing on the great explorers.

We will learn about

  • Christopher Columbus
  • Neil Armstrong
  • Amelia Earhart
  • Captain Edward John Smith

Geography lessons this term will focus on:

  • UK Capital Cities
  • Human and Physical features e.g., Coast, Mountains
  • World- 7 Continents & 5 Oceans

In Art lessons the children will:

  • Observe the work of our class artist Clarice Cliff.
  • Know how to mix paint to create all the secondary colours
  • Create tints with paint by adding white and know how to create tones with paint by adding black.

 

Our class artist is Clarice Cliff and we will be looking at different pieces of her artwork.

In Design and Technology, the children will be making a product with mechanical moving wheels. We will design, make and evaluate a moving vehicle and be able to suggest improvements which could be made to the original design.

We will also design and make a food product e.g. sangria / pizza.

We will focus on skills of:

  • Cutting food safely
  • Weighing ingredients
  • Fine Motor skills

In our P.E. lessons we will:

  • Understand the importance of health-related exercise.
  • Create and perform a 4-part routine set to music in dance.
  • Work to improve the FUNdamentals of movement (Jog, Sprint, Jump, Hop, Weight on Hands, Balance & Coordination).
  • Practise swimming skills.

Our Class Olympic hero is Max Whitlock. We will be learning all about his journey in gymnastics.
